Sports venues in Putrajaya must be viewed in the long term and not judged on the current usage level, Director of services Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj) city Datuk Ghani Ahmad said.
Ghani was commenting on complaints that most sports facilities in Putrajaya were only white elephants, including the newly built RM3.48mil Putrajaya Futsal complex in 18.º precinct.
The first event held in futsal complex was the Putrajaya Futsal Rentap during the youth day celebrations in may, when they were received over 1000 entries and since then only some Futsal courts use the 10 and a Court Cup-size covered.
A resident in 18.º Precinct said that the premises were little used as most players preferred use two Futsal courts Taman Pancorona where booking rates were much lower.
Is not popular:Only few cars are seen at the pier parking of the courts in precinct 18 in Putrajaya Futsal.Futsal complex is a project proposed and funded by Ministry of sport and youth and PPj run only its construction and now is managing its operation.
All the courts in a phase of the project were opened and reservations of more than 500 were recorded from June until the end of the month, he said.
Ghani said PPj expected more reservations during school holidays and tournaments that will be organized by the Ministry of sport and youth during the same period.
He said for this month only until the 14th of October, PPj already registered 212 hours of use involving 1420 players.
Ghani added that for any development project, there were positive and negative aspects and as Putrajaya was a growing city with rapid urbanization, is only a matter of time when these facilities would be fully used.
No takers:The Court of futsal named after football legend ex-Mokhtar Dahari only Olympic sized Court complex Futsal in precinct 18, Putrajaya. We believe more will use the facilities as the population increases, added Ghani.
Ghani said that Futsal courts can also be used for volleyball, basketball, netball competitions.
As for the Putrajaya Water Sports Complex, Ward 6, installations are used only during the week and in big tournaments.
One of water sports events held during most weekends is the waterski and Wakeboardbut must do more to encourage the use of the premises during the weekdays.
Although became a meeting place of several international Regattas, the facilities are underused and there is a fear that would turn into another white elephant if the authorities do not encourage the use of the facilities.
The PPj also is encouraging young people to capitalize the recreational facilities at Lake that can be used for water polo, kayaking, Jet-skiing and canoeing.
